No Billups:Landry Fields Needs To Step Up

With Chauncey Billups likely out for game 2 other players will have to step up in a huge way. The Amber Alert has been activated for Landry Fields ever since the arrival of Carmelo Anthony, his play has diminished and so have his minutes. Fields has severely suffered from Melo's style of play, Fields was building a pedigree of moving without the ball and Amare racking up assists because of it. As of late Fields has reverted back to forced drives to the rack and flat shots from the perimeter. But with Toney starting at the point we should see more of the "Elbow" play and the traditional "Pick and Roll" which allows Fields to float around the Three and slash to the hoop from back screens.

One "Pro" from Landry struggles has been Douglas's scoring, he has erupted since the trade and he has stolen much of the shooting guard minutes, but tonight we will not have the luxury. Fields must contribute tonight. His stat line can be unattractive and still accomplish this task, a big shot here or a key offensive there and he will jump back in the fans and coaches good graces. Of course there are other options for Coach D'Antoni to go with, Anthony Carter's minutes increase and Toney swings to the 2, or Bill Walkers minutes climb. Neither of those are bad options but they should be the second option. Game 2 could very well become the Stat and Melo show but solid play from the once back to back Rookie of the Month Award winner would definitely help. the greater good.

Nuggets Want Too Much For Melo

via NYPost.com

The Post has learned the Nuggets made a whopping demand one week ago that is more exorbitant than recent reports. According to a league source debriefed on Carmelo Anthony negotiations, Denver asked for Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Landry Fields, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov and a first-round pick (obtained via Anthony Randolph) for Anthony and point guard Chauncey Billups.
Yes, it looks like the Nuggets demanded everything but James Dolan's Radio City Music Hall.

"They want everything," the league source said of Denver. "The Knicks didn't even have to sit down and talk about that offer. It's not even logistically possible. They'd have two miserable stars with nothing around them."

Listen Mr.Ujiiri,Denver Can Be The Next Cleveland Cavs

It's been a slow week or two in the Carmelo Anthony trade talks, which is unusual as the clock is ticking down pretty quickly to the trade deadline, which is now less than three weeks away. Why the slowdown?
The most obvious explanation: Anthony only wants to be traded to the Knicks and the Knicks are smart enough to wait until this offseason rather than trading for him.

The ball is squarely in Denver's court.
sources says the Knicks don’t feel pressed to present a substantial trade offer to the Nuggets.
Their choices: re-assess what New York has to offer and accept the discount, pray that the New Jersey Nets execute an about-face and re-enter trade talks, sell Melo for pennies on the dollar to a contender that doesn't require an extension to pull a trade, or hold onto him and watch him walk away for nothing in free agency this summer.
All things considered: putting something together with the Knicks still seems like the best, most realistic option.

If the Knicks have to breakdown and include Danilo Gallinari with Landry Fields it would be a big loss, but it’s necessary.

G.M. Donnie Walsh needs to get creative with this. Unload Eddy Curry's expiring deal for an above average big man or a tough defender that Denver could really use right away.

The Landry Man

Say his name 5 x in a mirror and he appears.

Well, not quite. But I bet Landry Fields has done his fair share of giving opposing teams some nightmares. While living out what other rookies would consider a dream.

He is the starting 2 guard for the New York Knicks. Our New York Knicks. A winning New York Knicks. Landry had the luxury of not being part of the team for the last ten years so he probably cannot put it into proper perspective as to what playing winning basketball means in New York for its players and us, the fans.

When you look at the box score night and night out you might see something like 10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Not ground shaking numbers. Possibly not even Rookie Of The Month numbers. An award he has one more than once during this young season.

Be careful though, statistics do not always tell the whole story. There is no statistic for intangibles. The utility worker in this league usually will not wow you with statistical numbers but they always leave their stamp on the game. The impact they bring. The key rebound, the great defensive play, the deflected pass, the art of drawing charges, crucial baskets from unlikely heros.

Those things are what Landry Fields brings to the table night in and night out. You know what you can expect from him. And just like our expectations from him when we drafted him with the 39th pick, he often exceeds them.

Coach Donnie Walsh was told he was "going to have a hard time keeping Landry Fields off the court". That might be an understatement. As much as Amar'e, Raymond Felton and the emergence of Wilson Chandler are responsible for this new found success of the Knicks. Landry deserves his fair share of credit as well.

I refer to him as the "Veteran Rookie" for his poise on the court. His basketball IQ is obviously off the charts. Going to Stanford did not hurt either. He rarely ever makes what I would consider a "rookie play" such as bad shots, botched play, or appears lost on defense. Pretty impressive for any player in this league, never mind a rookie.

So while Blake Griffin may be at home polishing a well deserved Rookie Of The Year Award for dunking on everyone who is bold enough to stand in his way. He also will be watching another Rookie perform in the post-season like he's done it before.

Thats Landry Fields... The Veteran Rookie.

Landry Fields The Next John Havlicek?

Dime Exclusive: NBA Rookies(Landry Fields On Hazing, Veteran Mentors & New City Life From NYC To L.A.

via Dimemag.com

Dime: Have you had any rookie hazing?

Landry Fields: Uh (looks around the locker room) it’s not too bad. I don’t want to say that loud because they might make it worse, but it’s been alright so far (laughs).

Dime: Who are your veteran mentors? Have any guys taken you under their wing?

Fields: They’ve all been really good, but I’d say the one that’s been the best for me is Ronny Turiaf. He’s always in my ear and I think we have the same kind of basketball IQ, so when we’re out there talking, it’s really successful.

Dime: Likewise, how have you been adjusting to life in a new city?

Fields: Um, it’s a little hectic. There’s a lot more going on, it’s not as laid back as out here in L.A., but I’m adjusting pretty well.

Dime: Do you foresee any rookie wall happening at some point?

Fields: People keep talking about the rookie wall. You know we’ll see how it goes. Hopefully I’ll remain even keel and it never happens, but you never know.

Landry rising in NYC

via espn.com

Landry Fields would not be starting for the New York Knicks if not for a fateful decision made 25 years ago by his father, Steve, who had been selected in the seventh round of the NBA draft by Portland in May 1975, but was waived by the Trail Blazers late that summer.

Steve Fields was close with Cavs forward Jim Cleamons, now an assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers, and arrangements were made to have Fields come to camp in Cleveland to try out for a spot on that Bill Fitch-coached team.

But Fields also had an offer on the table from an ABA expansion team, the Baltimore Claws, and he chose the land of the red, white and blue basketball over the NBA.

"Like an idiot," he said, "I said, 'No, I think I've got a better chance going with this new ABA team.' Little did I know."

The Claws ended up folding before playing a single game in what would be the ABA's final season, and Steve Fields wound up playing semipro ball for Armstrong Cork (now Armstrong Floors and Windows), a job that entailed doing 14 weeks of training in Lancaster, Pa., before he was assigned to Bellevue, Wash., where he played pickup ball in a crew that included Slick Watts, John Brisker and Fred Brown of the Seattle SuperSonics.

Steve moved from there to California, where he met his wife, Janice. They went on to raise three children, putting a hoop up in their driveway in Long Beach where their two sons, Evan and Landry, would spend countless hours shooting with their cousin Cameron Jones, now a senior playing for Northern Arizona.

"When the kids were young they'd say, 'Gee Dad, why didn't you stay in NBA?'" said Steve Fields, who played in the summer pro-am leagues in Los Angeles alongside Michael Cooper and Lorenzo Romar. "And I said, 'You better be glad I didn't, because you wouldn't be here if I did.' So I guess fate, destiny, whatever you want to call it, has brought us to where we are now."

Where we are now is a situation in which Landry Fields, the 39th overall pick in last June's draft after leading the Pac-10 in scoring and rebounding at Stanford, is one of only four rookies from the draft class of 2010 starting for their NBA teams. (The others are Washington's John Wall, Minnesota's Wesley Johnson and the Clippers' Eric Bledsoe, who is temporarily replacing the injured Baron Davis.)

Fields won the Knicks' starting spot at shooting guard when coach Mike D'Antoni decided Wilson Chandler would be better utilized to provide some scoring punch off the bench, and Fields has played well through the Knicks' first six games. Heading into Tuesday night's game at Milwaukee, Fields was averaging 8.7 points (seventh among rookies), 5.5 rebounds (sixth among rookies) and shooting 56 percent (third among rookies). In 150 total minutes, he has committed only 11 fouls and just three turnovers.

"He's not making mistakes, he's an efficient shooter and player, doesn't turn the ball over," D'Antoni said. "When you have guys who are going to score, Amare [Stoudemire] and those guys, you need someone who's efficient."

"If [Fields] does something, it's positive. There's not a lot detracting from what he does. He's a heady basketball player that'd be good anywhere if you're looking for chemistry things, what glues which five guys together."

Landry Fields The Clean-up Man

Landry Fields May Start At The 2

via NYDailynews.com

Mike D'Antoni wouldn't commit to a starting lineup Sunday after practice in Greenburgh, but did admit that rookie Landry Fields has a shot of being his starting shooting guard when the Knicks open the season Wednesday in Toronto.

"He could be everywhere from starting to coming in and playing significant minutes," D'Antoni said of Fields. "He is a rookie, so a lot of it is still unknown. But I'm very comfortable with playing him. The thing about him is that he doesn't need the ball to do a lot of stuff. When you have guys like Amar'e (Stoudemire) and different guys you want the ball going to, then you've got to have other guys to be the 'glue' guys. He exemplifies that pretty well."

Fields has edge over Rautins for Knicks' last spot

via NYPost.com

Rookies Landry Fields and Andy Rautins, selected back-to-back in the second round last June at Nos. 38 and 39, have become very tight, hanging together like glue during the Milan-Paris trip.

Unfortunately, they may also be fighting for the Knicks' last rotation spot.

If that's the case, it was won last night by Fields, who nailed a line-drive 20-footer to tie the score at 90 with 26 seconds left. That set up Toney Douglas to win it with two free throws after he got fouled off a pretty backdoor pass from Ronny Turiaf, as the Knicks downed the Wizards 92-90 at the Garden.

Fields, wearing No. 6 -- the number some Knicks fans thought would be worn by LeBron James -- finished the night 3 of 3 for seven points with four rebounds in 19 minutes. He's Mr. Hustle and is looking like the smartest pick of the second round, even if he's still not a polished jump-shooter.

"Landry just comes in and does everything good," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Defensively, he runs the floor, rebounds and I'll think he'll get more confidence in his shot. He's athletic and smart."

More from Landry's Rookie Blog

Zoolander, Snuggies and Justin Bieber

Hello, Knick Nation! I'm live from the Knicks practice facility where it's marketing day. Imagine the scene from Zoolander where he's dressed up like a monkey and told to dance; that's a perfect analogy of what today is like. There are different stations set up for us to accomplish. The first station is the signing station where we sign basketballs, posters and other Knicks apparel. That station definitely went the smoothest. The next station was a little more interesting. We had to model in some Knicks Apparel. My personal favorite was the Knick's Snuggie. If you havent already, check out Andy Rautin's Twitter to see what it looks like. I definitely want one now for my apartment. I think it will go good with the total elegance I have established already.

The next station involved me and Patrick Ewing Jr. singing a number of songs. My favorite was the Justin Bieber song, "Baby." I know what you're thinking, but don't act like that song doesn't get stuck in your head all day when you hear it on the radio. It's tough being a rookie though. I get passed up by all the veterans who have the entitlement of going first. You can't really complain about it, they have been in the league longer. Love it.
