Knicks Turned Down Melo Deal

According to Donnie Walsh Denver asking for too much:

The Nuggets offered Anthony and Chauncey Billups to the Knicks for Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton, Eddy Curry and at least one first-round pick.

Denver's interest in Felton isn't that surprising. He played under George Karl's long-time friend, Larry Brown, at Charlotte for two seasons and is eight years younger than Billups. However, Billups' $14 million salary for the 2011-12 season is a team option. If the team doesn't exercise that option, Billups receives a buyout worth approximately $4 million.

Would you take this trade if you were the KnicksGM?

Melo Very Aware of His Play During The Melo Drama

Melo is very aware of his play as of late.

"I think it takes a strong-willed person, a strong-minded person, to deal with the stuff that I deal with and still go out there and go to work every day and perform on a nightly basis,'' the Denver forward said about trade rumors that have swirled all season as the Feb. 24 trade deadline approaches. "I take my hat off to myself for dealing with all this stuff that's going on and still be able to go out there and play at the high level that I can play at. I really don't think an average person can walk in my shoes. I don't think that.''

"I just feel healthy,'' said Anthony, who dubbed this the hottest offensive stretch of his eight-year NBA career. "That's the No. 1 thing. My legs feel good. My body feels good and I'm starting to make shots. ... That fast that I did was really helpful and the timing that I did it, starting beginning Jan. 9 and ending Jan. 30.

"During that time, I felt sluggish. I wasn't eating that much. I wasn't getting the right foods in my system. And then after that I really started feeling real good about myself. My health started feeling good. My legs started feeling better. I guess they say you got to lose some things to gain some things.''
Anthony said he didn't follow the full rules of the Daniel Fast, which would have required a four-day stretch in which he didn't eat at all. But he found it tough enough.

"I didn't eat no meats, no bread, no sweets for 21 days, no soda,'' he said. "I almost killed myself. But now I guess I've paid the cost for it. I feel great ... I don't drink soda no more. After that, I still don't eat meat that much. No breads. I feel good, tough ... (During the fast), I was drinking Naked Juices, a lot of protein shakes, salads, fruits. That was it, man. A lot of veggies.''

I guess you cant really blame him for congratulating himself, he been on fire. Averaging 32 ppg and shooting 60% from the field since Feb1.

Sources: Knicks Melo Deal in Works!

The projected deal in place is:

New York would send Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to Minnesota and the Timberwolves would send Corey Brewer and a first-round pick to Denver. Denver would also receive Wilson Chandler from New York.

Someone in the Nuggets organization may be KnicksGM reader, we(and every other Knicks site) have been pushing for this deal to get done for some time now.

If this occurs Donnie Walsh must be granted GM of the Year at the trade deadline. This man really knows what he is doing, patience is truly a virtue.

Stay Tuned for more info...

A Closer Look At Carmelo Anthony

Traffic was heavy and slow moving but I finally made it to the Prudential Center about mid way through the first qaurter. Now this was far from my first live Nets game but I was surprised to see how empty seats there were considering the Melo Drama lead up story. My sole reason for attending this game wasnt just to catch a juicy rumor about Melo's feeling on this saga but was also to do some close-up scouting for my Knicks.

Now I'm sure on television we can all see what a great scorer he is but I was looking for some other Superstar qualities, you know those other attributes, like leadership, confidence building, and defense. Unfortunately there was not much of that at all, now sure he can create great space for himself and great opportunities to score but I didn't witness great leadership.

Despite the lack of vocal leadership and defensive effort I would still encourage the Knicks to trade for him today. Now there's so many different variations of trade possibilities that are out there so its hard to single out a specific scenario but if the Don(Donnie Walsh) can assemble a fair trade for all parties involved the deal must be done. Carmelo's faults do not out weigh his values, his scoring abilities are elite, pull up jumpers, post moves, first step drives, are all a part of his offensive onslaught. Some doubters assume that a Melo and STAT tandem wouldn't translate well on the court, I'm not one of those doubters. Carmelo's ability to create his own shot in pressure situations brings a much needed element to the Knicks already good chemistry.

The countdown to the trade deadline is now at 23 days, the Melo drama continues...

Carmelo Anthony, Nuggets set for NJ

via ESPNNewYork.com

"I really don't know what to expect," he said. "I know me, personally, I'm just looking forward to going there and getting a win."

Anthony said he has not ruled out any options for his future.

"As of right now, I don't think the Nets will be calling," he said, laughing.

"I expect it to be a pregame intensity to the game, and then I'm sure there will be some antics during the game that will have to be understood and handled," Karl said. "I would say for most of the time, those things usually motivate my team to play more focused and serious. If we have to play an intense playoff-type style game against a team like New Jersey, I think we're capable of doing that."

Karl says he's proud of the way the Nuggets have handled the Anthony trade circus.

"We laugh about it, we joke about it," Karl said. "In general, it has not had a big effect on our basketball."

I'm sure the laughing will soon stop around 2/23/11... I will be on hand at the Prudential Center keeping everyone posted on of the Melo Drama...

A Respectable Trade We All Can Live With

By now I know you all have heard a rumor or two involving Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks but here is a trade scenario via bleacherreport.com that I really like for all parties involved.

It's a three team trade involving the Knicks,Bobcats and Nuggets.

Knicks get Carmelo Anthony

Ray Felton is having a career year and to keep it going strong after the All Star break Donnie Walsh should look to get him some help.A play making point guard who can backup Ray who will accept his role assisting the likes of Amar'e,Chandler and Melo.So how about Felton's ex teammate D.J. Augustine

Bobcats get Al Harrington,Aaron Afflalo and Bill Walker.

Al Harrington comes to ball every night,we as NYK fans saw his grind first hand last year and the Bobcats can use what he brings to the court. Afflalo is a player on the come up and would replace what they loose in Augustine.Bill Walker with added playing time will continue to improve, his three point range has improved within the last couple weeks alone. He would make that team really athletic all around with his dunking ability.

Nuggets get Stephen Jackson,Danilo Gallinari,Eddy Curry and Landry Fields

That's a package in my opinion the Nuggets should jump on without any hesitation. It would include a first round draft pick of course or Anthony Randolph. It allows the Nuggets to dump the salary of Al Harrington, gain youth in standout rookie Landry Fields and with Gallo and Action Jackson gives them help today for a playoff run.Not to mention Eddy Curry's contract

It isn't perfect and its allot of speculation but I'm sure this can be used as a framework to something we all can walk away happy about.

Nuggets like Anthony Randolph more than we thought

Ken Berger from CBS Sports reports that the Denver Nuggets may now be interested in including Anthony Randolph in the possible Carmelo Anthony Deal. Previous rumors lead us to believe that the Nuggets were more concerned with Randolph being dealt in exchange for a draft pick first.

Knicks Monthly Review: December

Was December really that bad? These last few games definitely leaves a bad taste in our mouths, but a closer look at this month tells a different story.

I believe the majority of Knicks fans would have been very satisfied, if on November 30th they heard that the Knicks would go 8-5 in December. Some of the losses just sting way to much. Losses to the Heat will stick in our brains for a good while(or until 1/27 when the Knicks play the Heat again). But there were some quality wins in there as well, a shootout with Denver, the OKC blowout, and the Christmas block party win over the Bulls.

Even in defeat we learned a great deal about this Knicks team. The Boston game was the NBA's best game this season. Not to mention a controversial one at that, with the game clocks displaying a more tenth's of a second than we were awarded. In the two Florida losses(HEAT, MAGIC) the Knicks showed much heart and courage to rally back against two great teams.

December Schedule :

12/3 Win vs. Hornets 100 to 92

12/5 Win vs Raptors 116 to 99

12/6 Win vs Timberwolves 124 to 114

12/8 Win vs Raptors 113 to 110

12/10 Win vs Wizards 101 to 95

12/12 Win vs Nuggets 129 to 125

12/15 Loss vs Celtics 116 to 118

12/17 Loss vs Heat  91 to 113

12/18 Loss vs Cavs 102 to 109

12/22Win vs Thunder 112 to 98

12/25 Win vs Bulls 103 to 95

12/28 Loss vs Heat 98 to 106

12/30 Loss vs Magic 103 to 112

Layups: Knicks Do Everything But Win vs. Denver

via basketballreference.com

"The New York Knicks did everything in their statistical power to beat the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday night.

They made more field goals. They made more 3-pointers. They had more rebounds. They had more assists. They had fewer turnovers. And they had more blocked shots.

The Elias Sports Bureau told us that the last 266 times a team outperformed its opponent in all of those statistical categories, that team won the game.

Except the Knicks didn't win. They lost again, 120-118, their sixth straight defeat, this one starting a tough West Coast road trip. "

Of course, raw stats can deceive. Looking at our boxscore, we see that while New York did control the turnover battle and the boards, they were also beaten somewhat handily in eFG% and FT/FGA. That's bad, because eFG% in particular is far and away the most important of the Four Factors, the key statistical indicators of team success.

Four Factors

Pace eFG% TOV% ORB% FT/FGA ORtg
NYK 105.9 .485 8.9 30.6 .235 111.5
DEN 105.9 .517 10.9 21.7 .360 113.3

It's interesting that the Knickerbockers' latest loss (their 6th straight) came against Denver, a team whose star player (Carmelo Anthony) is constantly being linked to New York in trade rumors. With that in mind, you should read Will Leitch's take on a potential Anthony-to-NY trade in this New York Magazine piece from last week.
Because D'Antoni is at the helm, one would think the Knicks' slide has been the defense's fault, but they're actually a respectable 13th in Defensive Efficiency even after last night's game. The problem has been the 24th-ranked offense, in no small measure because Amare Stoudemire currently has a 98.4 offensive rating and a -1.35 offensive SPM.
Would adding Carmelo (+3.40 OSPM) as soon as possible help with the Knicks' offensive struggles? Probably. But as Leitch points out, it would also wreck New York's rebuilding plan by forcing them to give up assets to Denver. If they wait until after the season (if and when a new CBA is in place), they could sign him for less than a max deal would cost today, and without losing a Gallinari, Douglas, Chandler, Randolph, Mozgov, or Fields in the process.
