Wilson Chandler may lose starting spot?

via nypost.com

Wilson Chandler is in a funk, on and off the court, and is in danger of losing his starting position if he doesn't snap out of it.

To begin the preseason, Chandler is expected to start at shooting guard tomorrow when the Knicks face Armani Jeans Milano at Mediolanum Forum. But that could change with veteran Roger Mason, who signed as a free agent with modest fanfare, pushing Chandler hard.

Coming off a second straight ankle surgery and summer hernia surgery, Chandler didn't start playing at full speed until early September, and it shows. Despite bulking up in the off-season, his outside shot looks as limp as overcooked Milano pasta. He's still wearing the blue jersey of the starters, but for how long?

"My rhythm is definitely off," the normally reserved Chandler said yesterday after practice at the AJ Milano practice site. "I had to work on my health first. I'm just getting back to the court now, getting my timing back. "

"Healthwise, I'm pretty good. My body is just tight from the surgery. I'm just getting back to where it was before. That's the biggest part."

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni was asked about the team's potential weakness as a perimeter-shooting club. Though he disagreed with the premise, the coach admitted Chandler has to starting making shots.

"Wil's a little bit behind with his shooting," D'Antoni said, "because he hasn't played in a while. But he'll be a very good shooter outside."

Europe Love?

via Frank Isloa (Daily News.com)

Amar'e Stoudemire stood at the foot of the Roman Colosseum and felt empowered in a very Russell Crowe kind of way.

"Oh, I immediately thought of the movie 'Gladiator,'" Stoudemire says. "It was awesome."

It called to mind the story about Shaquille O'Neal traveling to Greece and being asked if he visited the Parthenon. To which Shaq replied, "I don't know. I can't really remember the names of the clubs that we went to."

Stoudemire, however, understood the history of the famous Colosseum and was overwhelmed by its beauty and history. That was four years ago, when Stoudemire and the Phoenix Suns traveled to Italy and Germany during the preseason for a cultural and basketball experience that brought an already tight-knit group closer together. He believes that the Knicks' anticipated European adventure will be a similar bonding experience for a team that features 10 new faces, including Stoudemire.

"It's great timing," Stoudemire said. "Our camaraderie is already pretty good. I was having guys over to watch 'Monday Night Football.' But Italy is going to make us do things together because we're in a foreign land. We're not familiar with the area so we've got to do things together."

Knicks Media Day Quotebook

via SlamMagazine

Anthony Randolph:

What he can contribute to this team.

“I have a lot of God-given ability that I think that I can bring to the team, as far as my athleticism and things like that. And I work my ass off. I love the game of basketball and I want to be good. And I feel if I have the opportunity and I’m in the right situation that I can be a great player in this league one day.”

Worst part of training camp?

“Worst part of training camp? [Pauses] There is no worst part of training camp. I mean, (I) play basketball for a living. I’m very blessed.”

What’s it like playing for Mike D’Antoni?

“I haven’t played for him yet, but uh…”

Toney Douglas:

When’s the first time he’s seen Eddy Curry this offseason?

“Today. I think he’s working out. Tomorrow we got training camp, I’m pretty sure he know that he gotta be in shape and stuff. He’ll be ready by tomorrow…”

Dealing with the herd of New York media.

“I don’t even read papers, to tell you the truth. I don’t do that. I just go out there and play my game and do what Toney Douglas do. [Laughs] For real. God gave me a gift to play basketball, make a living out of it. I love it. I love the game.”

I asked about his brother, Harry Douglas, who plays for the Atlanta Falcons.

“He’s doin’ good. They 1-1. They play New Orleans on Sunday. So, I’ll be watching that game.”

Ray Felton:

What do you think the difference between Chris Duhon last year and you this year will be in Mike D’Antoni’s system?

“Hey man, I’m not gonna say there’s no difference between anything man. I’m just gonna come in and play my game. Chris Duhon is Chris Duhon. Raymond Felton is Raymond Felton. So, I’m not gonna say nothing. Chris Duhon is a good friend of mine, so I’m not gonna say anything bad about him.”

New-Look Knicks, but Same Old Curry

via nytimes

Howard Beck reports

He has never looked more out of place and less relevant to the team’s future.

Through two days of practice, Curry has been relegated to the third unit, with the rookies and free-agent invitees. He has slogged through drills. On Saturday night, he was lapped by an entire group of players as they weaved through cones around the court.

By the end of Sunday’s practice, the third of camp, Curry was a spectator, watching his teammates jog with medicine balls while he stood near a basket stanchion. He is nursing a tight hamstring, making this the third straight camp that Curry has been injured.

“Obviously, we’re pushing these guys hard,” Coach Mike D’Antoni said. “He misses anything, it just makes it a little bit tougher.”

Asked if Curry was already behind, D’Antoni said, “Well, yeah.”

The setback was almost predictable. Curry reported to camp weighing 325 pounds — a 20-pound increase since April — according to a person in the organization.

Team officials had asked Curry to come back closer to 300 pounds. They also asked him to attend voluntary workouts in July and September. Curry never showed. He was the only player not to attend voluntary workouts and scrimmages this month.

Curry stayed home in July to be with family after the birth of his son. He said he stayed in New York for two months last spring but chose to work out on his own over the summer, with a trainer in Ocean City, N.J.

“It’s just what I wanted to do,” he said last week.

Walsh: 'I'll second-guess myself forever'

via: espnnewyork.com

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- If Donnie Walsh hadn't traded a 2012 first-round draft pick to Houston last February when he was in salary-dump mode, he might have possessed enough assets to acquire Carmelo Anthony before the start of training camp.
But that pick is gone, and the president of the New York Knicks can't stop wondering whether he made a monumental mistake.
"I'll second-guess myself forever on that," Walsh said Wednesday in a sitdown with reporters who regularly cover the team.
Walsh sent the Knicks' 2012 first-round pick, plus the right to swap first-round picks in 2011, to the Rockets along with Jared Jeffries and Jordan Hill in the deal that brought Tracy McGrady to the Knicks.
Walsh made the trade to clear enough cap space to make a run at two max-salary free agents, but the Knicks struck out in their attempts to land LeBron James and Chris Bosh, settling instead for Amare Stoudemire and Raymond Felton.
With Anthony now on the trade market, and with the Knicks one of his preferred destinations as ESPN.com's Mark Stein and Chad Ford are reporting, Walsh has all the assets the Nuggets are seeking -- a large, expiring contract, belonging to Eddy Curry, and young talent such as Anthony Randolph, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Toney Douglas -- except for the future No. 1 pick(s) that Denver desires.
(New York cannot trade its 2011 or 2013 picks because of an NBA rule prohibiting teams from going consecutive years without a first-rounder, so the best Walsh can offer right now is a 2014 first-round pick.)
"I think we got something out of it that allowed us to bring in 10 new players. But I didn't like it when I did it. I don't like doing financial trades. They're not basketball trades," Walsh said.

"I was going back and forth on that deal, and I guess I thought the ability to have enough money to get two stars, or get one star and one or two other players, that worked. We got Amare and Felton, so that worked," Walsh said.
"But you always want to keep first-round picks. The '12 pick I didn't like doing. I remember the night before we did it, thinking, 'I don't like doing this, but we're going to do it.' And I'll second-guess myself forever on that."

Eddy Curry not at Training Camp?

via: NYpost.com

Eddy Curry has claimed another dubious distinction -- last one in.
The Knicks' 7-foot center still has not shown up at the team's Westchester compound to participate in pre-training-camp voluntary workouts/scrimmages, according to multiple sources.
With new Russian center Timofey Mozgov arriving in New York last night, Curry will become the last Knicks player to report, according to sources. The official reporting date is Friday, with two-a-day practices starting Saturday.
Knicks brass hasn't seen or heard from Curry in more than three months. Curry, in the final year of his contract, also blew off the July summer league in Las Vegas, where he was expected to work out. Curry has spent most of the summer in Chicago, where a warrant was out for his arrest for failure to pay a judgment. He's also been seen at the Jersey Shore.
The Knicks have been told he is in good shape. But despite his massive weight loss, Curry was still in the 300-pound range when last season ended.
The Knicks were told Curry would arrive just after Labor Day. Didn't happen. Then they were told he'd be in Westchester last week. Didn't happen. They expected him again yesterday. Didn't happen.
Despite an uncertainty at center, Knicks officials view Curry as a giant question mark. Team scouts are excited about Mozgov's play for Russia in the World Championships. Coach Mike D'Antoni is looking to get 25 minutes a night from potential starter Rony Turiaf, along with using Amar'e Stoudemire and Anthony Randolph as a power-forward/center tandem.
*
Because of Curry's expiring contract worth $12 million, he's been viewed as a potential pawn in a Carmelo Anthony trade. Regardless of Anthony's preference to join the Knicks, the club is not considered to be in the running to get him via trade.
The Nuggets are looking for multiple first-round picks. Because the Knicks don't have their 2012 pick, they are not permitted to trade their 2011 or 2013 picks.
