Keeping an Eye on the Knuggets: Game 2

     Majority of Knicks fans are keeping a close eye on the Denver vs OKC series, personally I would like to see the ex-Knicks play well but I'm not surprised that there struggling. While most were quick to appoint them the "Sleeper" team in the west I knew all along that was mostly fools gold. True the winning streak was not to be overlooked, but it was not telling the real story of this team. Most of there opponents were caught totally off-guard with there open-style any can score attitude. The playoffs are all bout exposing weakness and exploiting them, clearly there is they have no "Goto Guy" in clutch possessions. The series will go back to Denver in Game 3, and hopefully the welcome home will have them running and gunning like the final 20 games of the regular season.

Knuggets Stats:

Danilo Gallinari: 7 PTS,  3-8 from the field

Wilson Chandler: 4 PTS , 0-6 from the field 4-4 from the free throw

Raymond Felton: 16 PTS, 5-11

Melo Drama Coming To An End?

The Carmelo Anthony trade saga is nearly over.

Indications are that a trade is imminent with the New York Knicks, with only minor details to be worked out before an agreement is reached, a league source said.
Anthony was not at the Nuggets' practice tonight, as they resumed workouts following the All-Star break.
Names that have been mentioned in a possible Anthony trade include the Nuggets' Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams and Anthony Carter.
Billups left the Nuggets practice facility Monday night after declining to speak to the media.

The Knicks, it has been rumored, could give up Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Eddy Curry.

Nuggets Want Too Much For Melo

The Post has learned the Nuggets made a whopping demand one week ago that is more exorbitant than recent reports. According to a league source debriefed on Carmelo Anthony negotiations, Denver asked for Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Landry Fields, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov and a first-round pick (obtained via Anthony Randolph) for Anthony and point guard Chauncey Billups.
Yes, it looks like the Nuggets demanded everything but James Dolan's Radio City Music Hall.

"They want everything," the league source said of Denver. "The Knicks didn't even have to sit down and talk about that offer. It's not even logistically possible. They'd have two miserable stars with nothing around them."

Sources: Knicks Melo Deal in Works!

The projected deal in place is:

 New York would send Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to Minnesota and the Timberwolves would send Corey Brewer and a first-round pick to Denver. Denver would also receive Wilson Chandler from New York.

Someone in the Nuggets organization may be KnicksGM reader, we(and every other Knicks site) have been pushing for this deal to get done for some time now.

If this occurs Donnie Walsh must be granted GM of the Year at the trade deadline. This man really knows what he is doing, patience is truly a virtue.

"Wilson's a restricted free agent and I'm going to sign him," Walsh said yesterday. "He's a helluva player."

Chris Luchey, Chandler's agent, said he and Walsh were close to a pact before David Stern made alarming remarks in late October about cap shrinkage.
"We have a great, open working relationship with Donnie," Luchey told The Post. "We did feel like we were close to having a deal done early on. We thought we were in the same ballpark on what his value was before the commissioner came out with strong statements. That kind of startled Donnie and got him to backpedal."
"So we agreed we can play it out, knowing it could backfire in them having to spend more money if his value goes up," he said. "His value has definitely risen since Oct. 31. But my belief is Donnie wants to retain him, even if another spectacular free agent -- not naming names -- comes up."

Thank the Basketball Gods that Donnie is in control, I think Knicks fans really under-appreciate the work this General Manager has done since he's taken over. He's showing us that even at his age you can still learn more, last year's free agency hoopla showed everyone that anything can happen so taking chances is not the answer. Wilson Chandler is not one of those chances, he's definitely a sure thing!

Wilson Chandler Wants to Re-Sign With Knicks

"I'd love to be here,'' Chandler said before scoring 23 points Tuesday at Denver. "Just the city and just being close to the people in the organization. I just love being here. ... I think the future looks great (for the Knicks).''

The Knicks will be able to match any offer next summer on Chandler. But it's not out of the question he will end up raising his value from what he could have been locked up for earlier this month.

Chandler is averaging 17.5 points and 6.1 rebounds. Both are in line to be career bests for the fourth-year man taken No. 23 in the 2007 draft.

"It's a possibility,'' Chandler said of his value improving. "It can go either way. You don't sign it and it can lower your value or it can go up.''

Chandler, though, did agree his value looks to be going up now due to his hot start.

The Knicks and Chandler's representatives negotiated until the final day. In the end, with uncertainties regarding the collective bargaining agreement that expires June 30, 2011 and with New York's desire to go after another marquee free agent next summer, the Knicks did not make an offer.

"Not really, with everything that is going on in the NBA (with the possibility of a lockout),'' Chander said about not being upset at not landing an extension. So it wasn't surprising. Just have a good year this year and hopefully things will work out next year. It's not like the world's coming to an end.

"It came close, pretty close (to an extension getting done). But it didn't happen, so that's neither here nor there. I just go out and play and don't worry about it, and everything will work itself out.''

Wilson Chandler will not get a contract extension by tonight's deadline for 2007 first-round picks, Knicks team president Donnie Walsh said yesterday.

As a result, Chandler will become a restricted free agent in July.

"We will wait until the year is over," Walsh told The Post. "It has nothing to do with Wilson. We want him. It has to do with the fact that there will be a new collective bargaining agreement and we are not sure what impact it would have."

Chandler has become an early candidate for sixth man of the year honors and could emerge as a potential pawn in a Carmelo Anthony deal. He has been the Knicks' best player since his demotion to the bench to start the season, averaging 21 points and 10 rebounds in three games. Chandler was the starting shooting guard in preseason but played passively.

You see the flashes of potential, those moments where his talent is clearly obvious. It's just not marginal talent either. It's the kind of talent that can dominate a game when he chooses to exert his will.
Yet, there are those other moments when all that skill seems non-existent, buried in lethargy or a lack of passion.
The Yankees had a player like that. His name is Robinson Cano. But I'm talking about Wilson Chandler, the Knicks' swingman who needs to have a breakout season if his team is going to make the playoffs.
Cano might well be the American League MVP after finally fulfilling all the potential the Yankees saw in him when they made him their second baseman in 2005. The journey was sometimes frustrating, as Cano would have people scratching their heads when he didn't always run hard on the bases or didn't get to a ball that he should have.

Cano wasn't always focused, or so it seemed. And he didn't dominate games, but settled for being a role player, insisting he was giving his all even when it didn't look like it.
But the last two seasons, Cano has evolved into one of baseball's best players, hitting for average and power while consistently playing a brilliant second base. He has become all the Yankees thought he would be, if not more.
Thus far, Chandler has been the player Cano used to be. There are times when he can take over a game like he did in the season opener Wednesday night at Toronto, where he came off the bench to score a team-high 22 points. He also had eight rebounds and played a part defensively in limiting Toronto's Andrea Bargnani to just four second-half points after scoring 18 before the break.
Chandler, who logged 29 minutes, carried the Knicks early in the fourth quarter when he scored 8 of his team's 10 points during one stretch -- and he helped seal the victory by hassling Leandro Barbosa into missing a potential game-tying 3-pointer from the corner with three seconds left.
"He's been that player for a while," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said of Chandler after the win. "He's very good."

Tuesday, players poked fun at one another as they stood in the mud to pose for a photo that could be outdated before the end of the month. With Carmelo Anthony's future in Denver unresolved, the Knicks remain in the hunt for one of the NBA's elite players.

Donnie Walsh is confident he can acquire a first-round pick to include in a deal for Anthony but the Knicks president still might not have enough assets to convince Denver to trade its franchise player. The Nuggets remain hopeful that they can convince Anthony to sign an extension.

Meanwhile, Walsh would have a chance to pry Rudy Fernandez away from Portland with a first-round pick. The questions the Knicks had concerning Wilson Chandler's recovery from offseason surgery are one reason why the club has explored the possibility of acquiring Fernandez, the disgruntled shooting guard who is in camp with the Trail Blazers after threatening to return to Spain.

How well Chandler progresses during the preseason will determine whether the Knicks revisit talks with the Blazers. According to a team source, Walsh tested the waters last month by offering Portland two future second-round picks in addition to one of the two players the Knicks picked in the second round in June - Andy Rautins or Landry Fields.

The Blazers rejected the deal and have summarily turned down trade offers from Boston and Chicago as well. Chandler, entering his fourth season, is one of the Knicks' more versatile players but is better suited to play small forward. Fernandez is a natural shooting guard with better range who could flourish in D'Antoni's system.

Plus, Fernandez is still on his rookie contract, and adding him would not affect the Knicks' salary-cap situation. Chandler, however, is in his contract year.

In Milan, D'Antoni felt that Chandler was slightly behind his teammates in terms of conditioning. That's understandable considering that Chandler had surgery on his ankle and groin over the summer and began running at full speed only three weeks ago.

But Chandler looked strong in the preseason opener against Armani Jeans Milano, scoring 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting in 22 minutes. Chandler remains one of the Knicks' most unassuming players off the court and more valuable players on it. Walsh

Wilson Chandler is in a funk, on and off the court, and is in danger of losing his starting position if he doesn't snap out of it.

To begin the preseason, Chandler is expected to start at shooting guard tomorrow when the Knicks face Armani Jeans Milano at Mediolanum Forum. But that could change with veteran Roger Mason, who signed as a free agent with modest fanfare, pushing Chandler hard.

Coming off a second straight ankle surgery and summer hernia surgery, Chandler didn't start playing at full speed until early September, and it shows. Despite bulking up in the off-season, his outside shot looks as limp as overcooked Milano pasta. He's still wearing the blue jersey of the starters, but for how long?

"My rhythm is definitely off," the normally reserved Chandler said yesterday after practice at the AJ Milano practice site. "I had to work on my health first. I'm just getting back to the court now, getting my timing back. "

"Healthwise, I'm pretty good. My body is just tight from the surgery. I'm just getting back to where it was before. That's the biggest part."

Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni was asked about the team's potential weakness as a perimeter-shooting club. Though he disagreed with the premise, the coach admitted Chandler has to starting making shots.

"Wil's a little bit behind with his shooting," D'Antoni said, "because he hasn't played in a while. But he'll be a very good shooter outside."

ESPN REPORTS KNICKS OFFER CHANDLER FOR FERNANDEZ

MADRID, Spain - I mentioned this in my report yesterday on the feud/pending divorce between Rudy Fernandez and the Portland Trail Blazers, but it belongs in the lead paragraph for this site: The Knicks are among the teams trying to acquire the Spanish shooting guard, and they have offered Wilson Chandler.

Other offers on the table include the Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls each offering a No. 1 draft pick in 2011, a league source told ESPN.com.

But after the Blazers turned down several offers of first-round picks in the teens on draft night when the team was still being run by former general manager Kevin Pritchard, they are looking to see if they can get a similar offer from a team they believe will finish in the middle of the pack next season.
