Earl The Pearl Monroe Thinks The Knicks arent Ready Just Yet

Earl "The Pearl" Monroe aka "Black Magic" aka "Jesus" told SportingNews.com he thinks the Knicks are not title contenders just yet.

“They have about 23, 24 games left,” said Monroe, who won a title with the Knicks in 1973 alongside future Hall of Fame teammates Walt Frazier, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, Willis Reed and Jerry Lucas. “They’re still in the thick of things. I anticipate them going to the playoffs.”

“It’s always said, when you get to the playoffs, anything can happen,” Monroe told Sporting News. “I don’t think this is their year for winning a championship or anything. But I think they can start to solidify themselves as a team that needs to be reckoned with and then try to go out and get some other pieces.” 

“I think the most glaring thing is a lack of rebounding and a lack of inside presence defensively,” Monroe says. “If in fact they can go out and address those issues, I think they’ll be on track to do something better next year.”

Anthony Randolph settles in with Knicks

Trades? Anthony Randolph has had enough of that sort of thing for one summer, having been dealt from the Warriors to the Knicks as the centerpiece of the deal that sent All-Star big man David Lee to the West. So when his name popped up in a rumor that would have sent him to Indiana for a first-round pick, or as part of a deal that would land disgruntled Portland guard Rudy Fernandez in New York, members of the Knicks brass quickly approached him.

“From everything they told me, right off the bat, from talking to the coaches and talking to [Knicks president] Donnie Walsh, they told me I will be here for many years,” Randolph told SN. “I haven’t been paying any attention to it. But I have been in there every day with the coaches, and they made it clear they want me here. Obviously, anyone can get traded, but this is home right now.”

Making a new home in the Big Apple is an interesting twist to the young career of Randolph, drafted by the Warriors with the 14th pick in 2008. His potential, at times, seems limitless. Walsh described him to reporters: “He’s a guy at 6-feet-11 who can basically jump over the basket. He can get the rebound and bring it down on the break and make a play. He’s gonna dunk on you if you’re not ready for it. He’s got an all-around game that I think can make him an elite player.
