"I think it was the right move," Kerr said of Phoenix's decision to not keep Stoudemire. "We were in a total different situation than New York. New York had to go and sign Amar'e once LeBron [James] slipped away. They had to go back to their fans and show something for all their cap maneuvering the last couple of years."
"Phoenix was looking at five years at a huge number," Kerr said. "We knew his knee issues. We were concerned about him long-term. I think he has good years left in him. I still think he's a risk in year 3, 4, 5 and they could be sitting on a contract that could strangle them. We weren't willing to take the chance."
