New York Knicks in Europe get warning from U.S. officials of Mumbai-style attack

Americans traveling in Europe, including the Knicks, were warned Sunday about possible terror attacks at tourist hot spots like hotels and sports arenas.

"This is real," said a former senior U.S. counterterrorism official who was briefed on the intelligence coming out of Pakistan.

Al Qaeda-inspired radicals in Europe are thought to be planning Mumbai-style coordinated attacks with guns and grenades at crowded venues.

The Knicks and other NBA teams playing preseason games in Europe had been briefed and were taking "appropriate" measures, league officials said.

In Italy, the Knicks played Olimpia Milano on Sunday, and the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves prepared for a game in London.

Sources said the teams would return to the U.S. immediately if the terror alert is increased.

Intelligence agencies said the threats were focused on Germany, France and England.

Although the U.S. was not under direct threat, officials in New York said they were prepared to ramp up defenses.

"We take everything, no matter where it happens in the world, seriously," Mayor Bloomberg said.

"We can't just look at Europe alone. We change some of our tactics and strategies," added NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly.
