MILAN - Donnie Walsh has spent two years trying to convince Garden chairman James Dolan to sign off on hiring Chris Mullin as general manager, a position that Dolan may be keeping available for Isiah Thomas.
Dolan cleared the way for Thomas to return to the Knicks after naming him a consultant last month. Thomas, the coach at Florida International University, had to resign the post sixdays later because the two titles violated NBA by-laws.

Mullin's presence in Italy is an interesting subplot. Mullin and Allan Houston are two leading candidates to replace Walsh, but Dolan, according to a source, doesn't see the need to make another hire when Walsh already has Glen Grunwald and John Gabriel working under him.
Mullin played for Walsh in Indiana and the two have remained close. Mullin spent time at the Knicks training facility before the draft. The Warriors last year did not renew Mullin's contract as executive vice president
